Student Success Jobs Program Scholars Coordinator
GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Center for Community Health and Health Equity (BWH CCHHE) develops, implements, manages, and evaluates initiatives that address and minimize disparities in health status. The CCHHE works with a variety of community organizations, health centers, and schools to accomplish this mission. Since 2000, the CCHHE has coordinated the Student Success Jobs Program (SSJP), an after-school and summer work internship program. This year, 75 students in the 10th-12th grades from seven Boston public high schools were provided with paid internships at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where they are matched with mentors, acquire new science-related skills, and prepare for college. SSJP also offers summer internships to college students and college scholarships to graduates of SSJP.
The SSJP Scholars Coordinator is a new position that will be fully integrated in the SSJP staff team. The position will report to the Youth Development Manager who oversees SSJP and will work closely with the SSJP Coordinator, who monitors the day to day operations of the program. The position will also work closely with the Youth Programs Intern and other members of the CCHHE youth programs team. The Coordinator will be responsible for the successful matriculation of SSJP graduates to college, and work with them to maximize college success. The position will also be responsible for the successful implementation of a summer program for rising high school sophomores, Project Teen Education About Careers in Health (Project TEACH), a six-week employment and educational program that provides a strong foundation for the SSJP program.

Community Liaison
The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), the regional planning agency for Metro Boston, seeks a Community Liaison to help achieve the goals of its long-range smart growth regional plan, MetroFuture. In large part, the Community Liaison will work to implement the Metro Boston Sustainable Communities (MBSC) program, which was initiated when MAPC received one of the first Regional Planning Grants awarded by the Obama Administration. This is an opportunity to work in a dynamic, inter-disciplinary, and innovative environment to build a more sustainable and equitable future for metropolitan Boston. The Community Liaison will play a role in local and regional place-based projects that involve close work with local officials, community groups, businesses, and institutions. These activities support additional efforts to remove local and state-level policy barriers, and create incentives for sustainable and equitable growth. More broadly, all of these efforts help to expand the ranks of local leaders focused on equitable and sustainable development at the local, regional, and state levels.
Essential Functions/Duties of the Position
Tasks will include, in collaboration with other staff:
- Developing strategies for campaigns and initiatives to effect change consistent with MetroFuture;
- Researching and identifying key constituencies for particular efforts;
- Interacting with and mobilizing existing and new allies;
- Fundraising to support MAPC programs, and “constituent-raising” to expand the base of supporters of MetroFuture;
- Building coalitions and fostering consensus;
- Sharing information about MetroFuture, the MBSC program, and other MAPC programs; ensuring inquiries are received and addressed by appropriate staff;
- Drafting documents and presentations to make the case for change, invite participation, request support, document progress, etc. to a variety of constituencies;
- Organizing briefings, workshops, other conversations, and various events;
- Written and verbal communication, and public speaking;
- Maintaining accurate records, including meetings notes and contact lists; and
- Other activities as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful applicant should have the following skills:

Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as planning, public policy, management, or communications;
- A track record of success in current or previous positions with tasks like those described above; and
- At least two year’s job experience, with evidence of progressive responsibility.

Responsibilities: JPI is seeking a half-time (.5 Full-time Equivalent) Development Manager to coordinate JPI’s
fundraising program, with an emphasis on individual donor identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
He or she will plan and implement all fundraising strategies, with assistance, as appropriate and necessary, from
JPI staff and board. Specific activities will include: develop and manage a donor database; conduct prospect
research; manage special events, create individual solicitation plans and produce fundraising materials for print
and web. The Development Manager reports to the Executive Director.
Specific Duties Include:
• Develop a comprehensive development plan for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of
individual donors, with a focus on major gifts.
• Work with other staff to identify new prospects for grants, and assist in writing proposals.
• Develop creative fundraising strategies aimed at segmented audiences, using both traditional strategies and
social media and e-campaigns.
• Manage, plan, and execute special events, especially donor cultivation opportunities.
• With Operations Coordinator, develop and maintain database of donors and prospects that documents gift
information, stewardship activities, and other relevant information.
• Schedule and facilitate meetings between JPI staff and board members and prospects/donors.
• With other staff, ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws regarding fundraising activities.
• Work together with communications staff to ensure JPI’s publications and outreach materials convey the
importance of donations to the organization meeting its mission.
• With Operations Coordinator, manage the mailing of solicitation materials and donation receipt letters.
• Contribute to preparation of grant proposals and reports, as needed.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree and coursework (formal or informal) in fundraising methodology and strategy.
• At least five years experience successfully raising funds for a non-profit organization, substantially increasing
the contributions to the organization by individuals.
• Proven facility in fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, special events, and
direct mail and email.
• Experience in building a development program from the ground up.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to communicate and promote
the goals of a mission-driven organization.
• Ability and willingness to travel to meet with donors and prospects as needed.
• Experience raising funds for advocacy, human services, and/or social justice focused organizations.

Responsible for the day-to-day operations of Start Strong’s peer leadership program.
Responsible for the design, implementation and evaluation of Start Strong peer leadership programs, curricula and activities that focus on the exploration, preparation and implementation of teen dating violence prevention and healthy relationship promotion programming. Supervises Peer Leadership Summer Institute staff including coordinators, instructors and seasonal support staff.
Acts as primary liaison between community centers associated with the Boston Start Strong Initiative.
Creates new teen dating violence prevention and healthy relationship programming reflective of local and national Start Strong needs.
Establishes contacts; develops and implements recruiting and retention strategies with schools, youth serving programs, health organizations and community-based organizations.
Provides technical assistance to schools, programs, agencies creating and sustaining teen dating violence prevention programming.
Assists in identifying and writing new grants.
Collaborates with BPHC’s administrative, fiscal and legal offices to determine and achieve administrative, budgetary and legal requirements of projects. Prepares reports and briefing material for Director on regular basis to provide information on status of projects, as well as recommendations for future action.
Meets regularly with the Director regarding all aspects of program operations, including but not limited to matters pertaining to program staff and other confidential matters. May represent management in grievance and arbitration process, including but not limited to hearing and adjusting grievances, and attending grievance and arbitration hearings. Works in a confidential capacity with the Director. Operates independently. Uses independent judgment and discretion to make decisions affecting the program and staff as it relates to program operations/services and BPHC policy. Provides supervision to assigned staff. Makes and recommends management and personnel decisions regarding program, including but not limited to promotion, transfer and assignment of staff, and imposition of discipline. Develops, implements and manages projects and/or initiatives related to the program for the provision of services and/or to ensure effective operations and compliance with established standards and/or contracted goals and objectives.
